I actually wanted to write a text about a fun ride with the yellow Songthaew. About how the driver of this shared taxi transported not only people, but also car parts and bags of unknown content. I wanted to write about how twelve people, including their luggage and groceries, squeezed into the interior and another stood on the exit step – right next to another bag of unknown content. I wanted to write about miy sitting neighbour’s knee in my calf, the elderly woman who was supposed to get to know her grandson for the first time, and an overturned bag full of eggs. Then two nuns invited me to lunch.

I just wanted to eat some dumplings. I had been looking forward to that all day. However, the evening came to an unexpected end.

I don’t have a sister. Well, at least none that I share my parents with. But there are these people who feel like family, even though you are not blood related. My sister Linna is such a person.

I admit: so far, hiking hasn‘t been one of my favorite pastimes. However, I didn’t want to miss the amazing view from Mount Arrowsmith over Vancouver Island. With no gondola going up, there was no other way but to climb through the forest and over rocks to the summit. Fortunately, there was a hiking partner – and motivator.

I had to leave the sheep farm fastly. The search for a new place to stay began and surprisingly only took a few hours – thanks to many warm-hearted and selfless people.

Jump at chances, someone once told me. That’s what I did when a Chinese roommate in the dorm in Toronto invited me for a spontaneous dinner with her friends. A gesture of kindness that ended in a fun and intercultural evening.

Every Wednesday, around 20 helpers come to Keppel Croft Gardens, spread across the 1.6 hectares, weed, mow the lawn, plant trees, and afterwards disappear. Every week they help Bill and Dawn Loney, the owners of the beautiful garden. They all support voluntarily. A “Random Act of Kindness”.
